Barnet’s Local Development Framework
Core Strategy – Publication Stage
Development Management Policies – Preferred Approach
Consultation period 30 September 2010 to 25 November 2010

We are in the process of developing a set of planning documents, known as the Local Development Framework (LDF). Together these documents form the overarching local policy framework for planning the future of Barnet. The LDF is a ‘folder’ of separate documents and two of the most important documents are the Core Strategy and Development Management Policies. We are therefore seeking your views as your contact details are on our LDF Consultation Database.

The Core Strategy sits at the heart of the Local Development Framework. It sets out where, when and how change will take place providing a shared vision of what Barnet will be like as a place in 2026. All other planning documents need to accord with its strategic direction and key planning policies.

The Publication Stage provides the final opportunity for public consultation on the Core Strategy Document.

Following consultation this document will be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate in early 2011. The Core Strategy will then be subject to an Examination in Public in 2011. The Publication Stage provides the opportunity for you to make comments which are substantiated as well as indicate whether you would like to appear at the Examination in Public. It is therefore important that you follow the format of the Core Strategy Representation Form.

Reflecting its importance the Core Strategy is at a more advanced stage of preparation (the Publication Stage) than the Development Management Policies document (which is at the Preferred Approach stage).

The Development Management Policies document sits beneath the Core Strategy in the hierarchy of the Local Development Framework. It sets out the detailed borough-wide implementation planning policies for development and forms the basis for local planning authority decision making.
The Preferred Approach is the first formal stage of public consultation on the Development Management Policies Document.

Both of these documents (Core Strategy and Development Management Policies) will have an impact on all the borough’s residents, businesses and visitors. The consultation period runs from 30 September 2010 to 25 November 2010.

These documents and supporting documents including representation forms for the Core Strategy and Development Management Policies documents are available for viewing during the consultation period at the following locations:
  • The website: www.barnet.gov.uk/planning-consultations
  • Planning Reception, 2nd floor, Barnet House, 1255 High Road, Whetstone, N20 0EJ. Opening times 9.00am – 5.00pm (Monday – Thursday), 9.00am – 4.30pm (Friday)
  • All public libraries in Barnet.
Responses can be made using the representation forms via email to forward.planning@barnet.gov.uk and by post. All comments are to be received by 5:00pm 25 November 2010. Further information is also available from the team on 020 8359 4990.
