"Virtually every person in Sherborne, which is home to an 8th Century abbey, is fighting to prevent their community from turning into a 'Tesco Town'.

"Former Blue Peter presenter Valerie Singleton is one of 8,500 people (out of a population of 9,350) to have signed a petition against the superstore. Retail expert Mary Portas, who campaigns on behalf of small high street shops, is also supporting their cause.

"Unlike most other British towns, historic Sherborne in Dorset has so far been immune to the wave of more than 3,000 Tesco outlets that have sprung up across the country."
