Saving the Welsh Harp: Four Questions to the Mayor

Significance of Welsh Harp

Question number1683/2013
Meeting date22/05/2013

Question by Navin Shah

Do you agree that Welsh Harp, a ‘Site of Special Scientific Interest’ (SSSI) should be safeguarded to give it protection from obliteration due to pressure from development? Do you agree that London Plan should provide due protection to such sites of high ecological strategic significance?

Answer by Boris Johnson

The protection given to designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest is set out clearly in the relevant legislation and in Policy 7.19 of the London Plan. Your particular question relates to a planning application to which I will have to give further consideration, and on which it would be inappropriate for me to comment.

Welsh Harp Reservoir

Question number1277/2013
Meeting date22/05/2013

Question by Stephen Knight

Can residents with concerns over development proposals affecting the Welsh Harp Reservoir expect you to give the highest protection to this site of importance for nature conservation, in line with Policy 7.19 [Biodiversity and access to nature] of your London Plan?

Answer by Boris Johnson

Yes, I will follow the process set out in Policy 7.19 section E on assessing the impact of proposals on a SSSI. The views of Natural England will also be important in the consideration of any proposals.

West Hendon Estate 4

Question number1473/2013
Meeting date22/05/2013

Question by Andrew Dismore

Under Barnet Council’s new proposals for the regeneration of West Hendon estate there are no additional health services and local GPs and clinics are already oversubscribed; what representations will you make to Barnet Council about this?

Answer by Boris Johnson

The Council has indicated that the healthcare needs of the proposal will be met either through a Community Infrastructure Levy payment or if the applicant applies for exceptional relief, and is successful, through a section 106 contribution taking into account the facilitation of the provision of a 2 form entry primary school on the site and the impact on viability.

West Hendon Estate 5

Question number1474/2013
Meeting date22/05/2013

Question by Andrew Dismore

Under Barnet Council’s new proposals for the regeneration of West Hendon estate the impact on the important Welsh Harp nature reserve is such that it will risk losing its national SSSI status; what representations will you make to Barnet Council about this?

Answer by Boris Johnson

I considered this application at Stage I on 15 May and my views on this application are set out in the Stage I report. The report can be found at this link:
