"FIVE weeks of Christmas festivities are launched today (Thursday) when Laila Morse - EastEnders' Mo Harris - turns on the town centre's Christmas lights.

"The Business Improvement District has received a major boost to its programme from Hammerson, which has pledged £15,000 sponsorship for the events.

"Hammerson, which owns Centrale Shopping Centre in North End, is in competition with Westfield to redevelop the Whitgift Centre.

"Robin Dobson, Hammerson's director of retail development, said:
"We are delighted to sponsor the town centre Christmas celebrations this year, as it is a wonderful chance [to shaft Westfield, er...] for the whole of Croydon to get together and enjoy the start of the festive season."

"The Gruffalo and Mayor of Barnet switch on Christmas lights"

"Cheers erupted as storybook monster The Gruffalo helped the Mayor of Barnet turn on the Christmas lights at Brent Cross shopping centre this evening.

"... The mayor, Councillor Brian Schama, pressed a big red button lighting up Father Christmas’ grotto and a tree made out of golden stars and twinkling snowflakes.

"... Volunteers, including Councillor John Marshall, were also busy collecting cash for the Mayor’s charities including Barnet Carers and Barnet Hospital."
