[Reposted] John Lewis Brent Cross: History, telephone number and opening hours

"From controversy to success"

"Planning first started on John Lewis Brent Cross in 1966, when the Partnership agreed to be one of the two anchor shops in the new development.

"When proposals for the Brent Cross shopping centre were first put forward in the early 1960s, they encountered considerable opposition, and a public enquiry was needed before approval was given for the scheme to go ahead. At the time it was a unique development and a significant contribution to modern retailing. It was the country`s first covered regional shopping centre, with a total space of 1,000,000 square feet and 3,500 parking spaces. Located at the junction of the A41, the M1 extension, and the North Circular Road, it was well placed to attract shoppers from a wide catchment area." [by car]
