"The latest round in the battle to build a new shopping centre in Croydon begins tonight, when Hammerson reveals its plans for a 1.6 million square feet shopping mecca.

"The Brent Cross owner follows rival Westfield, which revealed its plans earlier this month. Hammerson wants to create shops, restaurants, homes, a hotel, five public squares and new car park, and around 5,000 jobs.

"Hammerson's £1 billion development, revealed here for the first time, will create a Whitgift Quarter — incorporating North End, the existing Whitgift Centre and Centrale, Hammerson’s other shopping centre in the town."
