"The Advertiser can reveal that governors of the Whitgift Foundation have received a letter from the Hammerson-led Croydon Alliance, urging them to abandon Westfield and throw their weight behind the rival bid.

"The letter, seen by the Advertiser, says Hammerson will 'propose to drop the Centrale brand [of the neighbouring shopping centre] and subsume it into the Whitgift Centre', while also promising to bring a new John Lewis store to Croydon. [So will Westfield.]

"And in a swipe at the foundation's decision to strike a deal with Westfield, the letter also suggests the foundation has acted in a manner 'inconsistent' with its 'history, ethics and charitable ethos'.
